An eight-time island golf champion has been fined £600 after twice breaching an alcohol ban and being found drunk in a public place.

Gary Wilson, of no fixed address, admitted all three offences and was fined £200 for each by High Bailiff Jayne Hughes.

He was also ordered to pay £125 prosecution costs.

The court heard that Wilson is currently subject to two bans, one imposed in August and one in October, both forbidding him from entering licensed premises and purchasing or being sold alcohol.

The October ban is due to run for a further five months.

Despite this, prosecutor Roger Kane told the court that staff at the Sefton Hotel had refused to serve Wilson on November 16 at 8.40pm after he entered the Harbour Lights restaurant area.

He left but on November 17 Wilson went into the British pub on the North Quay in Douglas and ordered a double vodka and Coke.

He was served before staff realised that he was banned. He was then asked to leave.

On November 18, police were called to the bus station at Lord Street after a driver reported Wilson refusing to leave his bus and then falling asleep.

Police arrived and asked Wilson several times where he lived and if there was someone who could look after him but could not get an answer. He was arrested.

Defence advocate Paul Glover said that his client was a self-admitted alcoholic who was currently working with Motiv8.

’He wishes to apologise to the police and the bus driver,’ said Mr Glover. ’He does have deep-rooted alcohol problems that he does intend addressing.’

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes told Wilson: ’You perhaps might want to go to Motiv8 more often.

’You need to address your alcohol problem, both for your own benefit and for the public who come into contact with you.’
