Fire chiefs have issued a warning about burning tyres in a bonfire.

Emergency services were alerted at 4.40pm on Friday following reports of thick black smoke in the area of Great Meadow, Ronaldsway.

On arrival, fire crews found that a bonfire had been lit containing waste including a large number of vehicle tyres.

The officer-in-charge liaised with the landowner and the fire was extinguished.

Firefighters were at the scene for about 45 minutes.

Under the Public Health Act 1990, all waste must be disposed of correctly, said fire chiefs.

Burning is not acceptable, safe or sustainable as it allows the escape of waste through emissions of particulates and smoke into the atmosphere.

Failure to comply with this duty of care can potentially carry an unlimited fine.
