There was standing room only as music fans enjoyed an evening of nautical sing-song and sea shanties, at a fund raising evening held in the run-up to the Peel Traditional Boat Weekend.

The Salty Dogs and the Gangplankers hosted the evening at the Sailor’s Shelter, in Peel, last weekend, and had the intimate venue packed to the gunnels as they entertained the crowd with their versions of well-known sea-going songs and classics.

The Salty Dogs, featuring guitarist and singer Paul Reynolds, concertina and harmonica player Ken Crellin and Annie Pearce on the cajon, had the crowd joining in singingwith such songs as the ’Irish Rover’, ’Will Ye Go Lassie Go’ and ’Song for Ireland’.

Earlier on in the evening, the Gangplankers, a five-pece vocal harmony group, featuring the combined voices of Roger Woodcock, Paul Cringle, Lynne Tootill, John Lewis and Edith Lewis also sang a set of maritime-themed shanties and songs including ’South Australia’, ’Roll Down Ladies of Peel’ and the ’Drunken Sailor’.

Towards the end of the night, the Gangplankers and the Salty Dogs all grouped together for a final, rousing version of ’Whiskey in the Jar’, which again had the audience in full voice.

The evening, which also included a raffle, helped to raise more than £300 for Peel Traditional Boat Weekend, which takes place this weekend, Saturday August 3 and Sunday August 4.
