The World Bonnag Championships were hotly contested this year with 26 entries.

Held in St James’ Church, Dalby, the event saw bakers from around the island compete to make the best bonnag.

After having missed a year due to the pandemic, contestants were keen to return to be judged within five classes – these being gentlemen, ladies, children under 14, commercial, and gluten free.

Winners included Julie Boyle for the gluten free class, Rachel Boyle for children under 14, Nigel Kermode from Greens for the commercial category, Sue Leeming for women’s and John Corrin for men’s.

The Friday competition was accompanied by the usual concert, which this year featured new act Mine’s a Shanty, a sketch from Dot Tilbury about the NSC flumes, and readings of a number of poems by Annie Kissack.

Margy Killey, organiser of the event sponsored by Shoprite, said: ‘It was a marvellous night.

‘It was a bit unfortunate because we had to cancel it last year and we’d already sold the tickets, then the people held onto their tickets and they came this year so we couldn’t do the same advertising as we would normally do therefore perhaps we could have got more bonnags. The atmosphere was brilliant and we had a fantastic concert to go with it which Dot Tilbury arranged.’

Cheques were also presented to charities Bees for Burundi and Alana’s Gift on behalf of the church.
