The Sound Cafe on a clear starry night was the subject of the winning photograph in a prestigious competition to celebrate the island’s buildings.

Manx-born IT manager Paul Ward was the man behind the lens and was delighted to win the Isle of Architecture I Love This Building competition.

’I chose that image (to submit) because I liked the red haze from the brake lights of a car: it adds a bit of colour,’ he said.

The competition was run in conjunction with Manx National Heritage, whose chairman of trustees, Jonathan Hall, presented Mr Ward with a £300 voucher for Manx Natinal Heritage’s Yn Thie Thooit, the four-star Manx thatched holiday cottage, as well as a food hamper and a bottle of champagne.

Mr Ward, who is 41 and about to get married, said the prize was a ’great addition to our wedding and honeymoon plans’.

The entries were judged by photographer and architect Patricia Tutt, chairman of Culture Vannin Chris Thomas, MHK, architect and previous trustee of Manx National Heritage Tony Pass and editor of Gallery magazine, Steve Redford.

All the entries will be on display at Noa Bakehouse until August 2.
