The Roald Dahl-themed tasting event at Close Leece Farm Cafe on Friday turned out to be possibly the most fun you could ever have eating a meal.

Its seven courses were big on imagination and high jinks. Each course was preceded by a short video clip from a relevant Roald Dahl film which explained the inspiration behind each dish. First course was ’George’s Marvellous Medicine’: chilled melon and Coppa ham soup.

The next course, was inspired by ’James and the Giant Peach’, and it did look exactly like a peach, until you cut into it and discovered a filling of coarse Tamworth pork pate, wrapped in peach jelly.

The ’BFG’ dish, a cucumber stuffed with crab, was followed by ’Fantastic Mr Fox’: duck wrapped in chicken wrapped in Tamworth pork belly, with a Manx cider sauce.

This was followed by ’Witches’ - Formula 86, which of course cannot be revealed.By this time, the excitement was building for the next course, ’Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’.

Tablecloths were swept away to reveal film covering the surface beneath. We were brought dishes of blueberries, fresh and concentrated, and jugs of cream sauce and told to pour them onto the table. In the background, large domes of dark chocolate were being brought out of the kitchen along with jugs of something which sent smoke pouring out of the tops.

The smoking mix was poured into each chocolate globe.

They were then brought to each table and dropped so they cracked open to reveal their contents, iced blueberry and bubblegum Eton mess, which joined the already spread out blueberry and cream sauce mix.

By this time it’s fair to say that all the supposedly sophisticated diners had reverted to their childhoods and there was much clapping, cheering and giggling as we tucked in.

And really, why shouldn’t food be fun? Life is serious enough without us all getting overly reverential about our food. This was a night that taught us one thing: lighten up, have a bit of fun with your food, and enjoy what you are eating.
