One of the nation’s most-loved TV sitcoms will be brought to the Isle of Man in a unique style this weekend.
Just two actors will perform episodes of the classic TV series Dad’s Army at the Peel Centenary Centre on Saturday, March 7 from 8pm.
Stage actors David Benson and Jack Lane will perform three episodes of the show, especially re-written as radio shows, and will provide the voices of each of the 25 characters themselves.
Voicing the famous characters such as Captain Mainwearing, Sergeant Wilson, Corporal Jones and Private Pike, the two actors have been credited with bringing a fresh new interpretation on a well-known and highly-familiar TV institution.
The episodes being re-created are ’When You’ve Got To Go’, where Private Pike is recruited into the RAF, ’My Brother and I’, a Christmas special that was first broadcast in 1975 and ’Never Too Old’, the final Dad’s Army episode, shown in 1977, and features Corporal Jones’ wedding interrupted by a possible invasion.
During the TV show’s run, many of the shows were re-written for the radio.
These three shows, however, were never included in the radio scripts, so both David and Jack were given permission by the estates of the shows creators, David Croft and Jimmy Perry, to adapt them for their new show.
The actors said that the opportunity to bring a new interpretation of the classic show was a huge honour for them and one that came with a lot of responsibility, given the wide-spread affection people still hold for Dad’s Army.
’Our aim has always been to be as true to the original, in finding the voices and mannerisms of the characters as possible,’ said Jack.
’There was no messing about it with it or trying to be "cleverer than it was" by sending it up .
’We love Dad’s Army as much as our audiences do and it is a privilege for us to have the opportunity to share our delight in our nation’s best-loved sitcom with audience’s all over the UK.’
Tickets for the Dad’s Army Radio Show are £18, and are available from Shakti Man, in Ramsey, Celtic Gold, in Peel, GH Corletts, in Douglas and Thompson Travel, in Port Erin, as well as online from etickets.im/cc
