A group of youngsters is raising money to have the chance to sail on an historic vessel.
Their expedition will be part of the Scouts’ work for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award but requires them to raise £895 each.
’I had hoped for a discount if we fill the boat, but they are raising their prices next year and will have no trouble filling all the places available,’ said Explorer Scout group leader Ron Spencer.
’We need them more than they need us. But the immediate concern was that of raising the deposit as we do not have any reserves of funds to meet that sort of outlay.’
The boat’s owners required a 25% deposit immediately, cash the youngsters did not have. An approach was made to the Isle of Man Masonic Charity, which helped with a cheque for £1,500.
’The Freemasons’ donation has been wonderful,’ said Ron.
The new Explorer Group was started April 2016 with six boys and now has 12 Scouts, including a young woman. The age range is between 14 and 18. Further fundraising by the scouts will be required.
’I really hope to do this expedition as I enjoy sailing and I want to get the Gold Award which will help my career,’ said Explorer Scout Pete Kempson, aged 15.
’It satisfies my sense of adventure.’
Earlier this year Freemasons awarded a sum of £50,000 to four local charities as part of celebrations marking the 300th anniversary of the Grand Lodge of England, and a further £50,000 was committed by Freemasons from the Province of the Isle of Man for equipment and training to Rebecca House.
Provincial Grand Master for the Isle of Man Keith Dalrymple said: ’Freemasons are ready to work with local charitable organisations to support worthwhile causes, both large and small, in our community.’
