A railway locomotive that featured in the closing credits of hit TV sitcom Hi-de-Hi is back in action after a major restoration.

And the steam-outline diesel engine, which has been re-named Maltby, will be officially launched at a ceremony on the Groudle Glen Railway this Sunday (July 29).

Built by Baguley in 1947 and latterly named Parracombe, she once worked at the Butlin’s holiday camp in Clacton, Essex, and featured in clips used for the closing credits of Hi-de-Hi.

Her last season at Clacton was in 1976.

The locomotive has been based at Groudle since 2007. During 2017 she underwent extensive refurbishment work at the North Bay Railway, in Scarborough.

She has been re-named Maltby in honour of Richard Maltby Broadbent, the Victorian entrepreneur who developed Groudle Glen and opened the narrow gauge railway there in 1896.

Mr Broadbent, born in Bibaloe Beg in Onchan in 1850, also constructed and operated the Pavilion on Harris Promenade, later replaced by the Gaiety Theatre.
