Police say there has been a poor return rate for applications to renew firearms licences.

Inspector Derek Flint said: ’Every three years all firearms certificates have to be renewed. This means that there are nearly 1,000 forms sent out, with a deadline for return of February 28 to ensure that all the administration can be completed and certificates issued well before the April 1 renewal date.

’The return rate has been really poor. This now puts the administration unit under great pressure to process the forms, make the necessary checks that ensure we maintain public safety, and then get the certificates back in the hands of the applicant. Unfortunately, if the firearms holder isn’t in possession of their new licence on April 1, then they are committing offences of unlawful possession.

’I’m appealing to the public who have not yet submitted their application to make this an absolute priority so that we stand a fighting chance of keeping everyone the right side of the law. We will treat over-runs on a case-by-case basis dependent on the circumstances, but it’s unacceptable to have unlicensed firearms in the public arena. Anyone who needs assistance is advised to contact firearms licensing urgently. You can contact us on 631402 between 8am and 11.45am Monday to Friday.’
