The Isle of Man’s flag bearer and water carrier have been named for next month’s Island Games in Gibraltar.

Experienced badminton player Kim Clague will have the honour of carrying the Manx flag and leading the team into the Games’ opening ceremony which takes place on the evening of Saturday, July 6.

Swimmer Aimee Myers, 13, has been selected to be the island’s water carrier at the ceremony that is to take place at the Europa Point Sports Complex.

The water carrier role is traditionally given to the youngest member of the team and it is an integral part of the opening ceremony.

Representatives from each of the 24 competing islands proudly carry a vessel containing water from their home island. The contents of all the vessels are then poured into one big receptacle.

Aimee’s selection for the team came after being named earlier this year to be part the Utmost Wealth-backed and Isle of Man Sport-supported Fast Track project.

The Ramsey Grammar Student will compete mainly in the distance events at the Lathbury Sports Complex as well as hoping to assist the team in the relay events.

Clague has been picked to be the flag bearer by the Island Games Association of Mann and is chosen for her success and commitment to the Games in the past.

Kim will be aiming to secure her fourth consecutive gold in the women’s doubles, a feat never achieved by a badminton player in the history of the Games.

Clague won her previous gold medals in 2013 and 2015 with Cristen Marritt and in 2017 with Jess Li.

Kim and Jess will be defending their gold medal together this summer.

Clague first became island senior champion at the age of 16 and began her Island Games career aged 17 in Shetland in 2005. She has represented the Isle of Man in every Games since, becoming a multiple medallist in team and individual events, as well as being the most successful Manx badminton player at Island Games level.

Kim has also competed at the Delhi, Glasgow and Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
