A UK newspaper has voted Jurby beach as one of its six favourite island beaches in all of the British Isles.

The Sunday Times listed the northern seaside location in its article ’From Scilly to the Isle of Man, our six favourite UK island beaches’ as ’Best for Wreckers’ due to an on-land shipwreck of a vessel that ran aground there in 1931.

The Sunday national paper revealed its choices as part of its 40 Best British Beaches list, which include favourites from not only British islands, but also mainland Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, and the south, east, west and north of England.

The central promenade section of Douglas beach and Bay ny Carrickey in the south were also mentioned in the article, but it was decided that Jurby beach was the favourite of the lot.

In the article, it states: ’Seaside aficionados often overlook the Isle of Man.

’Its 20 monitored beaches - from Central, in Douglas, to wild and rocky Bay Ny Carrickey - regularly post excellent water quality, but our favourite is Jurby, up in the northwest.

’Wide, empty sands and a brow of low cliffs create a sense of isolation, and as the tide ebbs, the rusting remains of the steam trawler Pasages - wrecked here in 1931 - emerge from the blue.’

Surrounding the former fishing trawler, which can be seen clearly at low tide, are sandy shores and cliffs that encase the area.

According to Atlas Obscura, the Fleetwood-registered trawler was returning from a successful fishing trip for herring in water off Northern Ireland when it encountered gale-force winds at night.

It added: ’Thankfully, all 13 men were saved.’

Other locations that were named as best island beaches by The Sunday Times included Stinky Bay in Benbecula, Mersea Island in Essex, Cobo Bay in Guernsey, Rushy Bay in the Isles of Scilly and Ventnor in the Isle of Wight.
