Katie King from Manx National Heritage was the speaker at June’s Probus Club lunch held at Douglas Golf Club.

The MNH’s community outreach officer gave a talk about the 1960 and 1970s in the island.

In 1961 the island population was at a low number of 48,134.

The government decided to introduce initiatives to increase tourism in the island to help the economy.

This included a casino which was opened by Sean Connery, beauty pageants at the Villa Marina, which attracted crowds of 3,000 attending, pop concerts at the Palace by the likes of the Rolling Stones and PJ Proby and Radio Caroline taking up station in Ramsey Bay.

All of this helped promote the island, Katie explained.

Katie’s talk was supported with a range of photographs, which brought back many memories of the 60s to club members.

The Probus Club is open to retired or semi-retired people from all walks of life and may include business or professional people.
