New limits are being put on king scallop catches.

The scallop management board has recommended lowering the total allowable catch to ensure the sustainability of the stocks and industry.

The new fisheries limit for the season, which begins next week and runs from November 1 to the end of May 2019, has been reduced from 3,203 tonnes to 2,562 tonnes.

A daily catch limit of 700kg per vessel has also been recommended, as has closing the fishery over the Christmas and New Year period, from December 21 to January 3.

Environment, Food and Agriculture Minister Geoffrey Boot MHK, has supported the recommendations.

He said: ’The economic effect of the declining king scallop stock has been hidden by the higher prices being charged, but there is no mistaking the downward trend in the availability of this valuable resource.

’That’s why I endorse the recommendations of the SMB. Reducing the total catch across the coming season will ensure that this continues to be a sustainable and economically worthwhile business for all those who fish for king scallops in Manx waters.’

The decision to reduce the TAC comes after a report produced by fisheries science advisors at Bangor University.

It shows that the stock levels are continuing to decline and that a precautionary approached is needed by rule makers to ensure the industry has a sustainable future.

The SMB has also announced Jennifer Mouat has been appointed as its new chairman.
