Major repairs are needed to the iconic TT scoreboard opposite the Grandstand.

Remedial works are to be carried out to keep the scoreboard and timing huts going for the next three years.

But no decision has yet been taken on their long-term future.

The chequered flag could fall on them for the final time after the 2020 TT and Festival of Motorcycling races when planned roadworks on Glencrutchery Road are expected to require the scoreboard and the timing huts being taken down.

An extensive consultation will take place over the intervening three years to fully consider a replacement structure.

Rob Callister MHK, political member with responsibility for motorsport at the Department for Enterprise, said: ’There is an opportunity to look at the biggest picture with regard to the Grandstand, the scoreboard and surrounding area to coincide with the roadworks being undertaken by DoI in 2020.’

A structural survey of the TT scoreboard and timing huts was commissioned by the DfE to establish their condition and ensure the safety of pedestrians, traffic and race personnel.

A full electrical survey has also been commissioned.

The department will now invite expressions of interest for companies to carry out the interim structural works.

The Cronk Ny Mona indicator lights will require a complete rebuild of the switch box and re-wire of the scoreboards.

The scope of structural works on the scoreboard include strengthening of existing balusters, by the addition of new one with new longer bolts and screws, and replacement of rotted timber boarding to the low level gantry.

Uneven boards to the low-level gantry will be fixed, with timber removed, wall plates adjusted and existing boards - where good - reset.

Timber supports of the front plywood skirt to the low level gantry will be replaced and a new kick board will be fitted to the high level gantry.

Corrugated roof sheeting to the high level canopy will be removed and replaced.

Finally, isolated timber purlins supporting the roof sheeting will be secured.

Mr Callister said none of these works was major but all needed to be done. He said was unable to provide a cost of that work at this stage.

The DfE’s motorsport team has previously reviewing all options for the old scoreboard, including a manual replacement, a digital one or a combination of the two.

For the 2015 TT, a safety fence was put in front of the scoreboard after the clerk of the course, Gary Thompson, raised health and safety concerns about the position of the Scouts, who traditionally man the scoreboard during races.
