The large roundabout on the Cooil Road in Braddan that lies between B&Q and the Jacksons car dealership could be getting a new centrepiece in the form of an as-yet-unknown sculpture.
Eden Park Developments Ltd has submitted an application (19/00420/B) for the roundabout which would also see improve landscaping and the construction of a small wall in front of the Jacksons site. The application for the sculpture offers no hints about its eventual shape or even what it may be designed to represent.
Eden Park said it would consult with planners through the process before commissioning an artist to make the structure.
To comply with road laws, the design of the proposed sculpture would have to ensure it doesn’t block the view of drivers to their right.
However, the enormous size of the roundabout, having a ’40m inscribed circle diameter’ means it that it needs to provide a curved 40m site line, which it is shown in the application is achievable dependent on the design of any sculpture agreed with planners.
The application also shows that if the sculpture sites in the middle of the roundabout, there is technically no height restriction on it, naturally as it gets further from the centre, restrictions come into place.
The company is also seeking to construct two walls, to the height of the existing grass bank, either side of the roundabout exit that is the entrance to Jacksons.
The walls would be built into the bank in the sense that the area behind them would be filled in and grassed over.
In a separate application (19/00421/D) Eden Park Development Ltd outlined its plan for the walls.
It would seek to instal illuminated permanent signs to the two walls, which would both read Eden Business Park.
The signs would be created using a metal frame with lighting provided from behind the lettering.
