Juan Watterson has been re-elected as Speaker in the House of Keys today.

Mr Watterson has represented Rushen since 2006, when he was first elected to sit as an MHK.

The house initially voted for an acting Speaker to oversee the official proceedings.

This saw Tim Crookall receive 15 votes, Daphne Caine receive six and Chris Thomas receive three.

There was laughter in the House when MHK Julie Edge had to get up and move seats - as where she was sat was not equipped to vote.

The House was then opened up for nominations for Speaker.

David Ashford nominated Mr Watterson, describing him as ’passionate’ about the role.

He said: ’Much of the work of the Speaker goes on behind the scenes [but] he is a details man.

’He is a House of Keys man, he has a real passion.

’He has [watched over the House] with passion and that passion is infectious.’

His nomination was seconded by Lawrie Hooper, who said: ’Better the devil you know!’

As no other candidate was nominated, Mr Watterson was re-instated in the role unopposed.

He told his fellow MHKs: ’I am both your spokesperson and your servant.

’Thank you honourable members, I am truly honoured.’
