Island visitors could soon get a ’great night’s sleep guaranteed’ thanks to Premier Inn.
A planning application (17/00823/B) has been submitted for an 85-bedroom hotel with a restaurant and bar to be built on a temporary private car park behind Marks and Spencer, in Market Street, Douglas.
The plan has been submitted by Dandara Commercial Ltd, which is described as a potential developer. The site is owned by Market Street, which is also part of the Dandara group.
Budget hotel chain Premier Inn, which has more than 750 hotels across the UK, is identified in drawings submitted with the application.
Drawings show the bedrooms would be spread over five floors.
The ground floor would house the reception area, luggage room, vending machines, bar, restaurant, kitchen and staff areas.
The 3,175 square metre building would be set back from Market Street to enable the road to be widened to make way for a drop-off and delivery zone.
At the rear of the site, there would be a terrace on the first floor with gated access. It would have a cycle store.
In the design statement, it says: ’The area in Market Street already exhibits many diverse architectural styles.
’Any building proposed within this location should therefore be kept simple in terms of massing and finishes.’
In the transport statement it says that no on-site parking is proposed ’on the basis there are a number of public car parks nearby that would be within a convenient 10 minute walking tome of the application site’.
The site, the former Bridson and Horrox print works, is allocated for predominately office use in the Douglas local plan.
Planning permission was granted in 2010 and extended in 2014 for a 2,268 square metre, six-storey office building.
