Rare Manx coins have sold for £9,640 at an online auction.
Staffordshire-based Richard Winterton Auctioneers held the virtual event on Monday February 22.
Coins which sold were from Pobjoy Mint, based in Surrey. Amongst the sought-after items were rare Isle of Man 50ps, featuring designs of ’Twelve Days Of Christmas’, a 2003 diamond finish of Raymond Briggs’ ’The Snowman and James’, ’Four Calling Birds’ and ’Six Geese A-Laying’.
Auctioneer Richard Winterton said: ’This coin collection has been outstanding and we are delighted it has sold so well at auction, fetching a total hammer price of £9,640.
’A wonderful archive of these rare Isle of Man Christmas 50p coins in beautiful condition and we had a huge amount of interest,’ he said.
’Catalogued across 33 lots, highlights included the coloured diamond finish Pobjoy Isle of Man 50p ’Twelve Days Of Christmas’ coin, mounted on an angel card as a Christmas tree decoration depicting six geese a-laying, which sold for £540.
’A 2003 diamond finish 50p of Raymond Briggs’ Snowman and James sold for £500 and a boxed pair of silver proof 50p coins showing four calling birds made £700.’
A boxed pair of ’Six Geese A-Laying’ silver proofs fetched £800.
Previously, we had reported that the coins were expected to be purchased in the region of £3,000.
There were more than 100 of the limited edition 50 pences dating from 1980 to 2012, including coloured and plain coins with some sterling silver proofs.
Surrey-based Pobjoy Mint was founded in 1965 by Derek Pobjoy, who purchased a coin press after leaving his father, Ernest Pobjoy’s jewellery and masonry business to set up a mint.
