A minute’s silence will be held to remember the men, women and children who died in the island’s biggest accident 45 years ago.

On the night of August 2, 1973, 50 people died and many more were injured when the original Summerland building caught fire.

The annual minute’s silence will take place at 7.30pm on Tuesday, August 2 at the site of the former Summerland leisure centre in Douglas.

Organiser Tina Brennen, who has campaigned for a permanent memorial to those who died to be built at the site said: ’For five years I’ve campaigned for a memorial proportionate to this disaster of national and international significance on this site which has been derelict for 12 years and for sale for 10 years.

’This site has a tragic history. It’s not one which should once again be airbrushed out of history, but respectfully commemorated for the victims’ families, island residents and future generations.’

Tina explained that her petition to government for a commemorative garden containing 17 memorial stones, one for each group of friends or family affected, received some 2,000 signatures.

Following the memorial, there will be a concert at Peel Centenary Centre on Saturday, August 4, with all proceeds going to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital burns unit.

The concert in Peel will feature local talent such as Mad Daddy, Anna Goldsmith and The Fecktones.

Tickets for the concert, which are £10 can be bought from Celtic Gold in Peel,Thompson Travel in Pott Erin, Shakti Man in Ramsey, Peter Norris Music in Douglas or the Centenary Centre website.

Tina added: ’If you can provide practical help, support or have an interest please get in touch with me.’ Her email is [email protected].
