An island chef created the ultimate portion of chips, cheese and gravy during lockdown, weighing 14,5kg (32lb).

Myka Marie Schuengel, who works at L’Experience Restaurant in Douglas, used 7.5kg of potatoes, 5kg of Manx cheddar and two litres of gravy to create what she believes to be the world’s biggest chips, cheese and gravy dish.

The chef embarked on the fun project with her husband, Frank, while stuck at home due to the pandemic.

Myka said: ’Not only is this the biggest single portion of chips, cheese and gravy ever assembled on our shores, but it is most likely also the biggest one anywhere in the world.

’The claim for biggest Manx-made chips, cheese and gravy is based on local research. Some might say that the Canadian dish "poutine" is also chips, cheese and gravy, but this could be disputed as poutine stipulates cheese curds as key ingredient and not cheese in its final form.

’Nevertheless, the Manx creation even surpasses the currently biggest single portion of poutine on regular sale, which is served by a restaurant in Montreal and stands at 25lb.’

Myka ordered the wheel of cheese specially from Isle of Man Creamery and carved out a bowl. The carved-out cheese was then sprinkled on top of the finished dish.

The sagitta potatoes were bought from Sandygate Farm Shop, which were then peeled and cut by hand before being twice cooked in beef dripping.

Two litres of home-made gravy was made from scratch using locally-sourced oxtail and vegetables, which was blended with some spices and some Bordeaux wine.

The dish’s ’pièce de résistance’ was edible gold which was added on top for an extra sparkle.

The total cost for all of the materials was around £60 with it being estimated that the dish contained 42,000 calories.

Myka added: ’Currently meant as a one-off project, the giant chips, cheese and gravy could find its way onto a restaurant menu if demand is there, but one would need a serious case of the munchies to conquer this beast!’
