wOMEN’S GOLF

Peel golfer Ana Dawson has been busy playing in two World Golf ranking events recently.

After a busy winter training with the England under-18s north west squad at Carden Park in Cheshire, the talented teen’s season is now well underway.

The Island Games medallist began by competing at the 36-hole Formby Leveret event just outside Liverpool where she finished a creditable 28th, posting rounds of 75 and 77 to end 10 shots behind eventual winner, Great Britain and Ireland’s Curtis Cup player Rochelle Morris.

Ana and her sister Lea then travelled up to Montrose in Scotland for the Scottish Under-18s Open Championship.

After a disappointing start Ana finished her first round in 29th place with a six-over-par 79. However, she moved up the leaderboard with a nice one-over-par 74 in round two leaving her in 21st, making the cut and giving herself another opportunity the next day.

This she did with a super two-under-par 71, birdieing three of the last five holes to leave her in 11th place in a field full of the best u18 girls in Europe.

Lea didn’t make the cut on the tough links course after rounds of 87 and 83, but invaluable experience was gained from playing in the event.

She backed this up by competing in the Midlands Under-16s Championship with rounds of 81, 87 and 80 at Hawkstone Park in Shropshire, all part of her preparations for this summers Island Games in Gotland.

Ana is now preparing for her next event at the start of May when she travels to Blackpool to play in another WAGR event at the Fairhaven Trophy. This will be followed by the Lancashire County Championships at the end of May at Bolton Old Links.

She would like to thank Isle of Man Sport, JR Moore Trust, Isle of Man Steam Packet Holidays and England Golf for their support, along with all the members at Peel Golf Club who have helped the Dawson girls and their golf.
