The final events in Isle of Man Table Tennis Association’s 2021 island championships were played last week.

UNDER-14S

Wednesday saw the under-14s competition being contested in a closely-fought group of four players.

Three of the entrants went on to win two of their games, with Megan Lord being unlucky not to attain a win.

Amit Lanin beat Ryan Holland 11/7 in the fifth end, Ryan then went on to defeat Dan Levine in straight sets with the latter beating Amit 11/9 in the fifth. After a countback, Ryan took the title with Amit Lanin as runner-up.

UNDER-16S

In the under-16s category, nine players lined up in three groups to play for the title.

William Dalugdugan won Group A with Ryan Holland as runner-up, while in Group B William Shooter took first place with Ege Niyazi in second and Group C was won by Charlie Callow ahead of Wilma Dalugdugan in second place.

Winners of groups A and B had byes through to the semi-finals, leaving the remaining four players to fight for their semi-final spot.

Ege upset the seedings when he beat Charlie 11/3, 11/13, 14/12, 11/9, while in a tightly-fought match Ryan then battled his way to victory against the impressive Wilma 10/12, 12/10, 11/13, 12/10, 11/8.

The first semi final was another long affair, with Ryan doing well to beat William Shooter 10/12, 12/10, 11/13, 12/10, 11/8, before William Dalugdugan had a slightly smoother route to the final, beating Ege 11/13, 11/8, 11/5, 11/5.

The final between William and Ryan was won in four ends by the latter 11/6, 8/11, 11/2, 11/9 - a very impressive win for young Ryan Holland to add to his under-14s title.

MIXED DOUBLES

The Mixed Doubles had only four pairs contesting the title.

Current holders Scott Lewis and Khayee Vinas successfully defended their title when they won all their matches.

Sean Drewy and Sonja Shaw narrowly beat Jason Quirk and Maggie Mulhern to take the runners-up spot 11/6, 9/11, 11/7, 7/11, 11/7, while siblings Wilma and William Dalugdugan were unlucky to lose all their games against more experienced players.

MEN’S DOUBLES

The Men’s Doubles saw only nine pairs contesting the event this year after some illness and a withdrawal.

Group A was topped by reigning champions Marc Townsend and Malcolm Cummings, with father and son pairing John and William Shooter finishing in second place.

Group B went with the seeding as Jason Quirk and Chris Holland took top spot ahead of Julian Briercliffe and Neil Quane as runners-up, while Group C was won by Sean Drewry and Sasha Thomas, with Andy Patterson and Wayne Taylor in second place. Byes were given to the winners of groups A and B.

The first preliminary match between Patterson/Taylor and the Shooters was a straight sets win for the latter pairing. The second preliminary match was between Drewry/Thomas and Briercliffe/Quane, with the former taking their place in the semis.

The first semi-final saw Quirk and Holland defeat the Shooters in another tight game 11/7, 7/11, 11/8, 7/11, 11/6, while the second semi was a win for Townsend and Cummings 11/6, 12/14, 11/7, 5/11, 11/7.

The final resulted in a straight sets win for Quirk and Holland who clinched the title.
