Isle of Man footballer Freddie O’Donoghue scored his first senior goal for Carlisle United on Tuesday evening.

The 17-year-old emerged off the bench for his side during their EFL Trophy group stage clash at Morecambe and made an instant impact.

With his side trailing to former Everton player Hallam Hope’s 16th-minute strike, O’Donoghue scored with his very first touch when he fired home from close range following a cross from the right by Ben Williams.

That strike turned the game on its head and the turnaround was completed only three minutes later when Williams also scored from inside the six-yard box to earn the visitors a 1-2 victory.

O’Donoghue’s strike was his first senior goal for the Cumbrians, having previously scored in the FA Youth Cup against Altrincham recently.

He follows in the footsteps of former Union Mills and St George’s defender Adam Long who scored for Doncaster Rovers in the then-titled Papa John’s Trophy against Lincoln City in September 2022.
