All of the fire appliances in the north of the island were put to use today (Friday) to deal with two separate kitchen fires.
Fire crews from Ramsey, Kirk Michael and Laxey were called to two fires in just over 20 minutes.
When crews arrived to the house fire in The Threshold, in Jurby, they found the blaze was threatening to spread throughout the property.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the fire before the remaining rooms were ventilated.
Station officer Tony Duncan said: ’There was extensive fire damage to the kitchen and smoke damage to the rest of the property.
’The cause of the fire was an electrical fault on a fridge freezer.’
More crews were called to a ’well-established’ kitchen fire at The Grosvenor pub, in Andreas.
Mr Duncan said that on arrival, crews were confronted with a fire that had broken out of the kitchen through a flat roof and was ’threatening to spread throughout the property’.
Breathing apparatus teams used handheld dry powder extinguishers and high pressure hose reels to extinguish the fire.
He said: ’Extensive fire damage was caused to the kitchen but, due to suitable fire safety measures in place, smoke damage to the rest of the property was mitigated.
’The cause of the fire was an overheated commercial deep fat fryer.’
With all appliances in the north of the island attending the two incidents, Douglas fire crews gave fire cover at Ramsey station until the appliances returned to their stations.
