A fire at Alessandro’s Italian restaurant on Monday night will leave the business closed for a while.

Two fire crews attended the fire on Monday at about 11.15pm were mobilised to reports of a fire alarm sounding in Castle Street, Douglas.

A fire service spokesman said: ’On arrival the officer in charge of the first attending appliance discovered smoke issuing from the front of a property in Castle Street.

’Crews forced entry to the property and two firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus and using thermal imaging equipment, located and extinguished the fire using a high pressure hose reel.

’Thanks to the early warning from the automatic fire alarm system the fire was able to be located and brought under control quickly. Crews were in attendance approximately 2 hours. The cause of the fire is under investigation.’

A post on the restaurant’s Facebook page said that ’everyone is safe as it happened after we closed but there is some damage in the back room’.

’After 3 months of being closed, this happens. But even this is not going to stop us. We will do our best to sort everything out and hopefully open again soon.’

An update added: ’I’m quite emotional because of the unbelievable amount of private messages, comments and offers for help I’ve received since last night. And they’re still coming. Manx Community spirit at its best.

’Overwhelmed by the show of support from friends, colleagues and customers from all over the world. As I mentioned last night, the fire brigade people were amazing not only last night but also today at the follow up.

’Also Manx Utilities, David Randle and his crew, Brendan Corrigan, Rob and others that arrived to help last night and today.

’In re-opening, we are just waiting for the powers that be to give us the green light to start work and hopefully open very soon, even if it’s only the front room as there was no damage there or in the kitchens.

’Thank you all again and hope to see some of you very soon. Team Alessandro’s’
