The Parker and Snell Company is set to bring its drama adaptation of Les Miserables to the Gaiety Theatre next week.

Adapted for the stage by Carl Parker, the show will take place from Wednesday, November 20 to Saturday, November 23.

Mr Parker will portray the titular character Jean Valjean, while John Walker is set to play his counterpart Javert in the production.

Other cast members include Saoirse Coyle-Carrol, who will play Fantine, and Harriet Summers, who will take on the role of young Cosette.

Written in 1862 and first adapted for the stage by writer Victor Hugo’s son Charles Hugo a year later, Les Misérables is a well-known story to both readers and audiences.

A spokesperson from the theatre company said: ‘Carl Parker’s adaptation of the novel focuses solely on the raw power of Victor Hugo’s original story, bringing audiences a version of Les Misérables that is closer to the book and more deeply connected to the themes of justice, redemption, and resilience.

‘The production seeks to bring out the urgency of the social issues that drive the plot – poverty, mercy versus strict justice, and the human cost of inequality, themes that still resonate with today’s audiences.

‘At its heart is Jean Valjean (Carl Parker), the embattled former convict whose journey from despair to salvation unfolds as a testament to human resilience and the power of mercy, confronted by Javert (John Walker), the police inspector unrelenting in his pursuit of justice.

‘The tragic young mother Fantine (Saoirse Coyle-Carroll), her innocent daughter Cosette (Beth Thomas) and Marius (Orry Wilson), the young revolutionary whose love for Cosette gives him hope, are also brought into sharp focus in this adaptation.’

Colin Snell, Parker and Snell Company’s artistic director, said: ‘We have had to ensure that the time period covered in this play from 1815, the same year as the Battle of Waterloo to 1832, the June Rebellion, provides a coherent narrative leading up to its final, intense scenes.

‘Audiences will be drawn into the lives of the characters as they navigate the challenges of post-revolutionary France, a society struggling with poverty, injustice, and the clash between revolutionary ideals and a conservative monarchy.’

The shows will take place at 7:30pm between November 20 and November 23, with a special matinee performance on Saturday, November 23 at 2pm.
