The Rushen Players amateur drama group are all set to bring ‘A Christmas Carol’ to the Erin Arts Centre this week.

A Christmas Carol is Charles Dickens' well-known tale of how the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge learns the importance of generosity towards all mankind and finally embraces the true spirit of Christmas.

A spokesperson from the Rushen Players said: ‘We are welcoming the start of the festive season with this now familiar tale.

‘The miserly and solitary Scrooge (Jack Verity), who only cares about money, refuses to use any of his wealth to help the poor and suffering, even at Christmas, which he calls a “humbug”!

‘He is visited by the ghost of Marley (Robert Clayton), his old business partner, and then the spirits of Christmas (Brian Matthews and Danny Berry).

‘Journeying through time, they show Scrooge how he has distanced himself from, among others, his former love Belle (Robyn Hughes) and his nephew Fred (Juan Bridson), and display the consequences of his actions.

‘Scrooge realises the error of his ways and determines to change. Awaking a new man on Christmas morning, he opens his heart - and wallet - to benefit the needy, starting with the family of his clerk Bob Cratchit (Graham Roberts), including Tiny Tim (Mia Quine).’

Other cast members include Barnaby Lockyer as a narrator, Ian Galloway as narrator two, Caroline Jones as Charitable Woman, Matthew Warren as Fezziwig, Michaela Morris as Mrs Fezziwig, Adrienne Sanderson as Mrs Cratchit, Lila Quine as Belinda Cratchit and Louise Drinkwater as Martha Cratchit.

The spokesperson added: ‘This version of A Christmas Carol, directed by Sarah Lockyer, has been written especially for the Rushen Players.

‘It sticks closely to the original story, including all of the familiar characters and scenes and incorporating traditional carols to evoke the warmth and charm of a Victorian Christmas.’

There will be four showings of A Christmas Carol across three days at the Erin Arts Centre. The first will take place at 7:30pm on Thursday, November 14, while Friday evening’s show will also take place at 7:30pm.

Saturday will then have two shows - a matinee at 2:30pm and a final performance at 7:30pm.

Tickets are priced at £12 for adults, £5 for under 18s and £10 for over 65s.
